Terms of Use

Last updated: May 15, 2026

Penny is a personal project, open for anyone to sign up and use. It is not a commercial product, not a business, and not a registered entity. There is currently no monetization, no advertising, and no paid plans — if that ever changes, you'll be told before it takes effect. These terms are not a substitute for a lawyer-reviewed contract — they're an honest description of how the project is run.

1. What Penny is

Penny is a personal-finance tracker built as a learning project by Aakarsh Mehta (referred to below as "the operator"). Anyone with a valid email address can sign up and use it. You can reach the operator at [email protected].

The project is offered free of charge. There is no paid tier, no premium features, no subscription, no advertising, and no commercial relationship between you and the operator. The operator may introduce paid features in the future; if that happens, you will be told about any change before it takes effect, and the existing free experience will continue to be available in some form.

2. Who can use it

Penny is open to anyone with a valid email address. You agree to provide accurate information when you sign up and to keep your account credentials secure. Penny hashes passwords with scrypt and never stores them in plaintext.

3. What Penny is not

Penny is not financial advice. The numbers you log are your own; the AI assistant ("Penny chat") generates suggestions based on your data but it is not a financial advisor, accountant, tax preparer, or licensed professional. Anything the app shows you is informational only. Do not make important money decisions based on what Penny tells you without checking with a qualified professional.

The AI assistant can be wrong, incomplete, or hallucinate numbers. Verify anything important.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the project for any illegal purpose
  • Try to access other users' accounts or data, or interfere with how the app runs
  • Scrape or harvest data from the app — your own data is available via Settings → Export
  • Submit content that is fraudulent, abusive, or designed to harm other users

The operator may suspend or remove your account if you violate these terms or do anything that puts the project or other users at risk.

5. Your data is yours

You own the financial data you enter. By using Penny, you grant the operator a narrow permission to store and process that data solely so the app can show it back to you and generate AI responses for you.

Your data is never sold and is never used to train any third-party AI model. Read the Privacy Policy for what's collected and which services touch it.

6. Account closure

You can close your account any time from Settings → Danger zone → Delete my account. A 30-day grace period lets you reverse the deletion. After 30 days, your data is permanently erased.

7. Availability

The project is provided "as is," with no uptime guarantees. The operator runs it on free-tier infrastructure (Cloudflare Pages + D1 SQLite); downtime, outages, or feature changes can happen at any time without notice. If something is broken, email [email protected] and the operator will look at it when possible — but there is no service-level commitment.

8. No warranties

Because Penny is a personal project provided free of charge, it is offered with no warranties of any kind, express or implied. The operator does not guarantee that the app will be error-free, secure against every threat, or fit for any particular purpose. Use it at your own risk.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, the operator is not liable for any damages — financial, indirect, incidental, or otherwise — that arise from your use of the project. If you make a financial decision based on something Penny showed you and that decision turns out badly, that is your responsibility.

10. Changes

These terms may be updated as the project evolves. Material changes will be announced in-app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. The date at the top reflects the most recent change. Continued use after that date means you accept the updated terms.
